Portovenere and the Gulf of Poets

Lord Byron and his fellow poets and writers chose well. Attempting to escape the decadent literary era of the U.K., they found the ideal retreat for contemplation and writing in the village of Portovenere, a hidden Italian gem tucked secretly in the Gulf of Poets (Cinque Terre).

There is nothing decadent about this idyllic Italian destination with its whimsical and soothing shades of blue of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the perfect base for exploration of this corner of Italy. Here, you’ll mingle with the local Liguri (Ligurians) and be inebriated by the scent of frittura mista (mixed fried seafood) and focaccina ligure (ligurian focaccia). I tasted trofie al pesto, diving into the exquisite and one-of-a-kind pesto ligure. The basilico of this region is flavorful, kissed by the Mediterranean Sea salt and its minerals. Its leaves are on the smaller side and are a vibrant green. I also savored frittura mista so typical of the Cinque Terre, its scent following me everywhere on my journey in this corner of Italy.

After a satisfying lunch, we went out to sea to discover the entire bay. The serenity and invigoration that this secret village provides is unparalleled. Should you get the opportunity to visit, allow yourself a full day of leisure in Portovenere. Stroll and explore the three streets that make up the village, walk to the castles at the two extremities as well as its Cathedral at daylight and again at sunset and again at night. The changing colors of the passing day will undoubtedly motivate and move you.
