In November, a partial collapse occurred at the medieval tower known as the Torre dei Conti, located near Colosseum and the Roman Forum in central Rome. The tower had been undergoing a restoration project and had been closed since 2007. It was slated to reopen as a museum in 2026. During the work, at least two structural failures occurred. The first collapse struck the central buttress on the southern side, causing the sloped base to fail while a second collapse followed while rescue teams were in operation, damaging part of the stairwell and roof. Workers were on-site at the time of the collapse. Several were rescued: three workers escaped unharmed. One worker was hospitalized in critical condition, and another was trapped under the rubble for 11 hours. Tragically, the trapped worker, identified as Octav Stroici, a Romanian national, died after his extraction. Firefighters described the extraction as extremely complex: every time part of the victim's body was freed, additional rubble would shift. Rescue operations were pursued with cranes, aerial ladders, rubble-suction tubes and even drones to reduce risk of further collapse. The Torre dei Conti is a 13th-century fortified tower, built by the family of Pope Innocent III. Over the centuries, it suffered damage from earthquakes (notably in 1349). The tower’s restoration was funded with significant investments and included installations of modern systems and the creation of a museum devoted to the later phases of the Roman Forum. Before reopening the latest project phase (started in June 2025), structural surveys and load tests were conducted, which officials said had “confirmed the necessary safety conditions”.

Le operazioni di soccorso hanno dovuto usare i gru, le scale aeree, tubi aspiranti ed anche i droni per diminuire il rischio degli altri crolli. La Torre dei Conti è una torre medievale del XIII secolo. Fu costruita dalla famiglia di Papa Innocenzo III. La torre ha superato danni a causa dei terremoti, in specifico nel 1349. Questo restauro è stato finanziato con investimenti e include un’installazione di sistemi moderni e la creazione di un museo dedicato alle fasi successive del Foro Romano. Prima di riaprire l'ultima fase del progetto che è stata iniziata a giugno 2025, sono stati condotti strutturali e prove di carico. Gli ufficiali hanno "confermato le necessarie condizioni di sicurezza".
