Umbria Jazz Winter in Orvieto

Every winter, Pino and I head to Orvieto for Umbria Jazz Winter which was held from December 30, 2025 to January 3, 2026.  We had tickets for a jazz concert for the afternoon of January 3 and were hoping to have lunch prior at our favorite Orvieto eating spot, Trattoria del Moro Aronne.

I had called ahead to the disappointing news that the trattoria was booked out for lunch and dinner that day. “Niente da fare affatto?” (Nothing at all?) I asked hopefully. Well, lunch for us would be possible IF we arrived by 12:30 p.m. Of course we agreed to.

We passed the 13th – 14th century medieval Palazzo del Popolo as we headed to the trattoria. Umbria Jazz Winter banners added swatches of color to the façade of volcanic tuff. In front of the palazzo, we caught the end of a rockin’ performance by Funk Off, the Florentine street band who is always an Umbria Jazz favorite.

Nearby was the entrance to the trattoria with an array of culinary awards on the glass window. Inside, diners shared the culinary enticements of Aronne. The traditional menu offered an array of culinary temptations…and I spotted a favorite dish right away, a version of aglione (a pasta sauce with tomato and generous amounts of aglio, garlic).

The special menu for that day, handwritten in a plastic folder, was under photos of jazz musicians on the wall. I’d almost missed it, but I was certainly glad I hadn’t as the antipasto caught my eye: torta di zucca, a winter squash flan. The flan was topped with a Parmesan cream sauce…buonissima.

Pino opted for one of the pasta specials that day: ombrichelli alle salsicce e funghi porcini (a pasta dish of thick spaghetti, ombrichelli, with sauce of sausage and porcini mushrooms). As his secondo, Pino chose a daily special, trippa (tripe) which definitely did not tempt me at all! I enjoyed my aglione pasta and flan.

We left the trattoria with an “Aronne” paper bag with our leftovers and, of course, espresso. We had no time for dessert as we had tickets to an afternoon jazz concert which started soon. Ah, Winter Jazz in Orvieto; numerous pleasures always.
