The Americano is truly a classic cocktail. First served in the 1860s at a Campari bar in Milan, it was originally named “Milano-Torino” because of the origins of its primary ingredients, Campari and vermouth. Around the turn of the 20th century, prior to prohibition, the drink became a favorite amongst American tourists in Italy and was newly dubbed the “Americano.” It is also said that the Negroni, another popular Campari drink, was spawned from the Americano when Count Camillo Negroni ordered an “Americano with gin” at a café in Florence. An Americano is also the first cocktail ordered by James Bond in “Casino Royale,” Ian Fleming’s first book in the 007 series. This iconic and simple cocktail recipe is perfect for a fall aperitif.
