Sixty-four people are dead after an over-crowded dinghy sank on its way to Italy from Libya. The Italian coastguard rescued 86 people from the boat just hours after it started sinking. Among the survivors was a 3-year-old girl whose mother drowned. A total of 2,832 migrants died on the central Mediterranean route between Libya and Italy in 2017, down from 4,581 in 2016. These deaths represent the first large-scale migrant tragedy of 2018.

La Guardia Costiera ha messo in salvo 86 persone a poche ore dall’affondamento del barcone su cui erano stati stipati. Tra loro anche una bambina di tre anni, la cui madre è invece affogata. Nel 2017, un totale di 2,832 migranti sono rimasti vittime durante la traversata delle acque del Mediterraneo, rispetto a 4,581 nel 2016. Questo incidente rappresenta la prima tragedia su larga scala del 2018.
