The Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan: a PLIDA Certification Center

The Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan is a PLIDA Certification Center (Italian Language Project Dante Alighieri), a very important accomplishment for the Metropolitan Area of Detroit. There are 350 Certification Centers in 74 countries in the world.

PLIDA is a language certification program attesting the competence and degree of mastery of Italian as a second language. PLIDA certification is formally recognized by numerous entities in Italy, including the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Education and institutes of higher learning as well as research facilities.

PLIDA offers a set of opportunities and tools to those who learn, teach and promote the Italian language: certification of Italian as a foreign language, updating of teachers, resources and educational projects, linguistic assistance to migrants and immigrant citizens, and materials ALMA PLIDA.

With the PLIDA certificate it is possible to indicate in a more transparent way the level of knowledge of Italian on the curriculum vitae, enroll in an Italian university without taking the Italian exam (level B2 or C1) and obtain a long-term residence permit in Italy.

Furthermore, through PLIDA, B1 certification can be obtained, which as of December 4, 2018 (Law December 1, 2018, No. 132) is an indispensable condition for the granting of Italian citizenship, pursuant to articles 5 and 9 of Law 91/92. In order to acquire Italian citizenship, possession of an adequate knowledge of Italian not less than level B1 of the Common Framework of Reference for the knowledge of languages must be demonstrated.

The Dante Alighieri Society is part of the Italian Language Quality Certification Association, CLIQ, along with the University for Foreigners of Perugia, University for Foreigners of Siena and Roma Tre University. The objective of the association is to promote a certification culture for Italian as a second language and to guarantee a quality system for the certification of linguistic skills, in line with the scientific standards set by the Council of Europe in the Common European Framework Reference for Languages.
