Italy in December

While the weather in Italy may not entice you to visit in the month of December, the Christmas season should. Being in Vatican City for Christmas is a life-long dream for some travelers and for good reason. Celebrating Christmas Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica is sought after by people from all over the world. So just make sure to plan ahead. The Christmas markets in most piazzas are also good reason to explore the country during December. Roasted chestnuts, vin brule (hot spiced wine) and cioccolata calda (hot chocolate) are served from carts and cafes. Religious processions and bonfires and feast days are other fun events to experience. While the beach towns may see a decline in tourists, the mountains are packed with skiers and snowboarders. Visitors can enjoy the natural hot springs at the local resorts. Although snow and rain grace our beloved home country throughout the month, December certainly offers many attractions for winter travelers.
