Legend has it that the railway tracks between Italy and Austria, Switzerland and France were designed even before the birth of the first trains. Innovators and engineers had already imagined that the meeting between these countries would, sooner or later, occur.

The first time I visited the Italian Alps and found myself in the heart of Lake Maggiore and Lake Como I finally understood the meaning of this fascinating legend. A visit to the picturesque alpine village of Stresa and a boat ride to visit and discover the jewels located in Lake Maggiore, Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori (along with another island which only serves as a monastery today) will take you back to the time of the royal banquets of the Borromeo family, and the renowned Charles Borromeo, who still owns the islands and the noble palaces present.

On both visits, the Borromeo flag was flying high to signify the presence of the family on site. This increased my curiosity as I was hoping to meet them maybe during the walk in the exotic gardens of Isola Bella, an amazing microcosm of Mediterranean and global vegetation in a unique microclimate that,  despite the freezing temperatures of northern Italy, maintains the flora and fauna of the island and the surrounding environment as in a capsule throughout the entire year.

An hour and a half drive from Lake Maggiore, you can visit Lake Como with its magnificent cathedral. I always make sure to taste the special pastries of this region.  The scents are Italian but also Swiss and Austrian. Desserts change shape and flavor in a quite delicious marriage. Another must-stop in this area is the renowned village of Bellagio, where you’ll be able to admire the many “Made in Italy” jewelry boutiques and breathtaking views of the Italian Alps.

For anyone who loves the snow or who wants to discover a less-explored romantic corner of Italy during winter (a less touristy season), the Italian Alps are certainly for you and will surely seduce you with their baroque details and Nordic accents.

A Royal Winter Retreat in the Italian Alps

Una leggenda narra che i binari ferroviari tra Italia e Austria, Svizzera, Francia furono progettati ancor prima della nascita dei primi treni.  Innovatori e ingegneri avevano gia’ immaginato che l’incontro tra questi paesi sarebbe, prima o poi, accaduto.  La prima volta che visitai le Alpi Italiane e mi trovai nel cuore del Lago Maggiore e Lago di Como capii finalmente il significato di quella affascinante leggenda.  Una visita al pittoresco borgo alpino di Stresa e un giro in barca per visitare e scoprire i gioielli situati nel Lago Maggiore:  Isola Bella e Isola dei Pescatori {insieme ad un’altra isola che funge solo da Monastero oggi} vi riportera’ indietro all’epoca dei banchetti reali della Famiglia Borromeo {rinomato Carlo Borromeo} ancora oggi proprietaria delle isole e dei palazzo nobili presenti.  In entrambe visite, la bandiera “Borromeo” volava alta a significare la presenza della famiglia stessa in luogo che aumento’ la mia curiosita’ nella speranza di incontrarli magari durante la passeggiata negli esotici giardini di Isola Bella, un incredibile micro-cosmo di vegetazione mediterranea e globale in un microclima unico al mondo che permette, nonostante le temperature gelide del Nord d’Italia di mantenere, tutto l’anno, la flora e fauna dell’isola e dell’ambiente circostante come in una capsula.  A un’ora e mezza in macchina dal Lago Maggiore, potrete visitare il Lago di Como — da due anni ormai ritorno sempre a visitare anche la citta’ di Como, la sua meravigliosa cattedrale, ma mi assicuro di assaggiare sempre le specialita’ pasticcerie di questa regione: qui, i profumi sono italiani, ma anche svizzeri, e austriaci, i dolci cambiano forma e sapore in un connubbio alquanto delizioso.  Un’altra fermata must in questa regione e’ il tanto amato villaggio di Bellaggio dove potrete ammirare le vetrine scintillanti di gioielli prettamente “Made in Italy” e godere della vista mozzafiato che le Alpi regalano.  Per chiunque ami la neve, voglia scoprire un angolo d’Italia poco esplorata, in un periodo di poco turismo come l’inverno, ma pur sempre romantico, un angolo italiano con accenti barocchi e dettagli nordici, le Alpi Italiane sono per voi e riusciranno sicuramente a sedurvi…
