At the time this article was published, rescuers are still carefully digging in hopes of finding more survivors after an avalanche smashed into a spa hotel in the remote mountainous region of central Italy. A total of nine men, women and children have been rescued from Hotel Rigopiano with 23 still unaccounted for. This is the same general region still recovering from major earthquakes last summer that demolished buildings and wiped out villages.
