Prada Acquires Versace in Landmark $1.4 Billion Deal, Reshaping Italian Luxury

In a defining moment for the global fashion industry, Prada has officially acquired Versace from Capri Holdings in a deal valued at approximately $1.4 billion (€1.3 billion). Finalized in early December 2025 following regulatory approval, the acquisition brings together two of Italy’s most iconic fashion houses, marking a significant consolidation of Italian luxury power on the global stage.

The transaction comes at a time when Capri Holdings has been facing financial headwinds, particularly with Versace, which has struggled to fully capitalize on its strong brand recognition. For Prada, the acquisition represents both a strategic opportunity and a cultural statement: strengthening Europe’s luxury landscape while reaffirming Italy’s influence in an industry long dominated by French conglomerates such as LVMH and Kering.

Prada’s leadership has made clear that the goal is not to dilute Versace’s identity, but to amplify it. The Milan-based group plans to leverage its well-established operational, industrial, and retail expertise to unlock Versace’s untapped potential, especially in high-margin categories such as accessories, leather goods, and footwear. This approach mirrors Prada’s successful revitalization strategies with brands like Miu Miu, where disciplined execution and creative clarity translated into strong growth.

At the heart of the deal is a compelling creative contrast. Prada’s refined minimalism and intellectual rigor will now coexist alongside Versace’s bold, maximalist aesthetic—an interplay that executives believe can generate powerful brand synergies without compromising authenticity. Donatella Versace will remain a central creative force, continuing to oversee the brand’s design direction and ensuring continuity of its distinctive, glamorous DNA.

Strategically, the acquisition creates a more formidable Italian luxury group capable of competing more effectively on a global scale. By combining Prada’s industrial strength and retail discipline with Versace’s global name recognition and flamboyant style, the group aims to build a diversified portfolio that appeals to a wide spectrum of luxury consumers.

Beyond balance sheets and brand strategy, the deal carries deep symbolic weight. It represents a rare unification of two contrasting yet complementary visions of Italian fashion—understated elegance and unapologetic glamour—under a single Italian-owned banner. In doing so, Prada’s acquisition of Versace signals not only a business transformation, but a renewed assertion of Italy’s creative and industrial leadership in global luxury.
