For the past 30 years in late December, the Umbria Jazz Winter festival livens up the medieval hill town of Orvieto, bringing in the New Year with a musical blast of jazz, rock, and country western. 

Musical events abound in the medieval palazzi, in the theater, in the piazzas, and even in the stunning 13th century cathedral (with Gospel on New Year’s Eve). This past year, in an Orvieto medieval palazzo, we joined ebullient visitors united in enthusiastic hand-clapping at a jazz performance where the rhythms and accompanying vocals of the Lovesick trio enthused all.

The music of Lovesick, an Italian band founded in Bologna by two multi-instrumentalists, is threaded with influences of country western, rock n’ roll and swing bringing alive the American musical spirit of the mid to last century and earlier.

Paolo Roberto Pianezza plays electric and acoustic guitars as well as lap steel and electric dobro which pairs with Francesca Alinovi on double bass. The two come together in vocal harmonies.  Alessandro Cosentino joined the pair on violin and percussion. They will soon be off for a tour in the U.S. Let’s just hope they will be back in Orvieto next December for Umbria Jazz Winter.

Gli eventi musicali abbondano nei palazzi medievali, nei teatri, nelle piazze e persino nella stupefacente cattedrale del XIII secolo (con il Gospel la vigilia di Capodanno). L'anno scorso, in un palazzo medievale di Orvieto, ci siamo uniti a visitatori effervescenti uniti in applausi entusiasti durante una performance jazz dove i ritmi e le voci accompagnatorie del trio Lovesick entusiasmarono tutti. 

La musica dei Lovesick, una band italiana fondata a Bologna da due musicisti polistrumentisti, è intrecciata con influenze country western, rock'n'roll e swing che danno vita allo spirito musicale americano del medio e ultimo secolo e precedenti. 

Paolo Roberto Pianezza suona chitarre elettriche e acustiche oltre a lap steel e dobro elettrici che si abbinano a Francesca Alinovi al contrabbasso. I due si uniscono in armonie vocali. Alessandro Cosentino si è unito alla coppia al violino e alle percussioni. Presto partiranno per un tour negli Stati Uniti. Speriamo solo che tornino ad Orvieto il prossimo dicembre per Umbria Jazz Winter.
