Torino Film Festival: A Snapshot

The Turin Film Festival (Torino Film Festival, often abbreviated TFF) is one of Italy’s key film festivals, particularly noted for its support of emerging cinema, experimentation, and non-mainstream works.

Founded in 1982, originally as Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani (International Youth Cinema Festival), the Torino Film Fest aims to showcase first or second films, documentaries, short films, experimental works, avant-garde/new cinema languages, retrospectives, and international films that may not get wide distribution elsewhere.

Hosted in Turin, Italy, many screenings and events take place in cinemas around the city and with strong involvement from the National Museum of Cinema.

Over the years, TFF has built a reputation for both its curated retrospectives and its ability to spot emerging talent. Many now-well-known directors presented early works there.

The 43rd edition of the Torino Film Festival runs from November 21 to November 29, 2025. Laura Chiatti will be hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. This year honors Paul Newman on the centenary of his birth. There will be a retrospective of 24 of his films, and the official poster features a photograph from “Absence of Malice” (1981).

Honoring a classic Hollywood legend, this gives festivalgoers a chance to revisit or discover a body of work spanning many decades. It also connects the festival’s focus on cinematic history to its contemporary programming.

If you’re planning to attend, here are some suggestions to make the most of the festival: Plan early — The big retrospectives and high-profile screenings often fill up fast. Balance competition and non-competitive sections. Sometimes smaller screenings in Zibaldone or special retrospectives surprise more than headline entries.

Check the venues. Key screenings are held at major cinemas in Turin but also at off-sites or museum venues. Look out for events with filmmakers. Panels, Q&A’s, and masterclasses are often part of TFF; if you care about the process behind the films, these are great!

The 2025 Turin Film Festival promises to be a vibrant celebration of cinema’s past, present, and future; a meeting point for innovation, reflection, and discovery. By honoring Paul Newman’s enduring legacy while spotlighting new and experimental voices, the festival continues to embody its original mission: to champion creativity and elevate diverse perspectives in film. Whether you’re a seasoned cinephile or a curious newcomer, TFF offers an inspiring glimpse into the evolving landscape of world cinema, all set against the cultural richness and cinematic spirit of Turin.
