Two Young Hearts for Today’s Church: The Canonizations of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

In a powerful and deeply moving Mass held in St. Peter’s Square before some 70,000–80,000 faithful, Pope Leo XIV canonized two extraordinary young laypeople: Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati. These gestures marked the very first canonizations of his pontificate—a milestone richly steeped in symbolism and hope.

At just 15 years old when he died in 2006, Carlo Acutis, now the first millennial saint, was a computer prodigy known for his devotion to the Eucharist. He created an online exhibition documenting Eucharistic miracles and balanced his digital talents with spiritual depth, earning the nickname “God’s Influencer”.

On September 7, 2025, Pope Leo XIV officially declared him the first millennial saint of the Catholic Church—a historic recognition of how modernity and faith can intersect beautifully.

Carlo’s path to sainthood was paved by two confirmed miracles: one from Brazil and another involving a Costa Rican student who survived a serious head injury—both attributed to his intercession. He is laid to rest in Assisi, his body clothed in sneakers and casual attire—symbols of his relatability and appeal to today’s youth.

Joining Carlo in sainthood, Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died at 24 from polio in 1925, was celebrated for his deep spirituality, active faith, and compassionate service to the poor through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. His canonization highlights the enduring impact of holiness lived in simplicity and generosity.

These two canonizations hold extra significance as they are the first saints declared under Pope Leo XIV, who began his pontificate earlier this year. The choice to elevate two young, lay figures emphasizes a vision of spiritual renewal through youthful energy and modern witness.

By presenting a millennial tech-savvy adolescent and a devout young man of charity together, Pope Leo XIV sent a clear message: holiness is accessible, relatable, and timeless. These canonizations bridge generations – affirming that sanctity thrives in digital spaces and acts of hands-on service alike.

These canonizations not only inaugurated Pope Leo XIV’s papal ministry but also offered two powerful role models for a generation seeking relevance, depth, and meaningful expression of faith.
