Antonio Tabucchi is one of the greatest Italian writers of the 20th Century. The winner of many prestigious awards, he is very well-known for his masterpiece Sostiene Pereira, a top-selling Italian novel of 1994. The discovery, in a bookstall in Paris, of a text signed by the famous writer Fernando Pessoa, revealed to him the key of what will be his greatest interest: the study and of Pessoa’s masterpieces. With the help of his Portuguese wife, Maria Jose de Lancastre, Tabucchi has become an expert, critic and translator of Pessoa’s work. A visit to Lisbon sparked his passion for the “fado,” a genre of music, and for the whole country of Portugal. He graduated from university in 1969 with a thesis on the “Surrealism in Portugal.” He spent most of his life in Lisbon, where he died in 2012.

Born in Pisa in 1943, it was at a very early age that Tabucchi began to fantasize about the world. Reading "Treasure Island" and looking at an atlas fueled his interest. He sees, for the first time, the Eiffel Tower, the Coliseum, the Tower Bridge, and many other landscapes in Europe and worldwide. Immediately after school, he moved to Paris for some time. It is in the French capital that he discovered the greatness of the world. There he originated his first reflections about his country of origin, on why people travel and about the importance of different places.
He wrote many novels, but I’m very passionate about his Viaggi e altri viaggi (2010), a collection of all his thoughts about traveling around the world. Many of these thoughts can be found in other texts that he has written throughout the course of his life, but, with this book, he encloses everything as if it was a greeting and a remembrance of his entire existence.

In Viaggi e altri Viaggi, Tabucchi takes us with him to discover the sensations linked to the cities which he visited. From Barcelona to Buenos Aires, from Florence to Bombay, from Washington to Melbourne. Anecdotes, memories, thoughts that allow you to travel around the world while comfortably seated on the chair of your own home. It is a text for those who love to travel, for those who travel even just with their mind and dream on the magnitude of what surrounds us. It is passion about poetry, an invitation to the discovery, to the continuous knowledge of oneself. There are many journeys, courtesy of a single great journey – that is, what we accomplish in our lives.

This text is a constant source of inspiration for me. As did Tabucchi, I began to meditate on the immensity and diversity of the world during the time I spent in Paris when I was 23-years-old. In that wonderful city, I discovered how much beauty is in every corner that surrounds us. I am in Ohio now, dreaming about the greatness of the world and continuing to seek its beauty, remaining anchored to my Italian origins.

Antonio Tabucchi è uno dei grandi scrittori del Novecento europeo. Vincitore di numerosi e prestigiosi premi, è molto conosciuto per il suo capolavoro Sostiene Pereira, romanzo del 1994.

La moglie di origini portoghesi, Maria Jose de Lancastre e il ritrovamento su una bancarella a Parigi di un testo firmato dal famoso Fernando Pessoa si rivelano per lui la chiave di quello che sarà il suo maggior interesse nella vita: lo studio e la traduzione delle opere di Pessoa, di cui è considerato maggior conoscitore, traduttore e critico. Si reca infatti a Lisbona e coltiva per la città del fado (un tipo caratteristico di musica) e per l’intero Portogallo una vera passione, laureandosi nel 1969 con una tesi sul Surrealismo in Portogallo.

È in giovanissima età che, con la lettura de L’isola del Tesoro  e con un atlante, inizia a fantasticare sul mondo. Vede per la prima volta le immagini della Tour Eiffel, del Colosseo, del Tower Bridge e di tantissimi altri monumenti europei ed internazionali.

Dei suoi innumerevoli scritti quello che più mi appassiona è Viaggi e altri Viaggi, una raccolta di tutti i suoi pensieri di viaggio in giro per il mondo. La maggior parte di essi si ritrovano in altri testi che nel corso della sua vita ha redatto, ma nel 2010 porta a compimento quest’opera che racchiude tutto come se fosse un saluto e un ricordo della sua intera esistenza.

Nato a Pisa nel 1943, subito dopo il Liceo si trasferisce a Parigi per qualche tempo.  È nella capitale francese che scopre la grandezza del mondo. Nascono qui le sue prime riflessioni sul suo Paese d’origine, sul perché si viaggia, sull’importanza dei luoghi.

Nel libro Viaggi e altri Viaggi, Tabucchi ci porta con sé alla scoperta delle sensazioni legate alle città che lui ha visitato. Da Barcellona a Buenos Aires, da Firenze a Bombay, da Washington a Melbourne. Aneddoti, ricordi, pensieri che permettono di viaggiare per il mondo stando comodamente seduti sulla poltrona di casa propria.

È un testo per chi ama viaggiare, per chi viaggia anche solo con la fantasia e sogna la grandezza di quello che ci circonda.  È passione per la poesia, un invito alla scoperta, alla continua conoscenza di sé stessi e alla comprensione della relatività dei nostri pensieri. Sono tanti viaggi, tessere di un unico grande viaggio che è quello che compiamo nella nostra vita.

Questo testo è una fonte continua di ispirazione per me. Anche io, come Tabucchi, ho iniziato a meditare sull’immensità e sulla diversità del mondo a Parigi, con un periodo di studi che ho compiuto lì a 23 anni. La città e il tempo che ho trascorso lì, mi hanno rivelato quanta bellezza ci sia intorno a noi ed in ogni angolo che ci circonda. Ora sono in Ohio a sognare la grandezza del Mondo e a continuare a cercare quella bellezza, rimanendo ancorata alle mie origini italiane.
