Francesca Mignosa: Vice Consul, thanks for your willingness to meet. I have learned that you are a native of Rome. Is this true?

Serena Scaiola: Yes, it is. I was born, raised and lived in Rome until the end of 1995. I attended private schools, a classical high school and graduated from the Universita' degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza." The decision to study in the United States brought me to the prestigious Cornell University, between 1991-1992. It was a very important experience personally and professionally. If I find myself in Cleveland today and I have the privilege to cover the role of Vice Consul of Italy it's due to my studies in America and an unexpected and gratifying life path that sprang almost accidentally from it.

FM: In 2006, you received the news from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy of your appointment in Cleveland. Was that a surprise? How long will you be in office?

SS: It's a privilege and an honor that I have accepted with great humility, along with a strong sense of responsibility for the profound trust and respect that has been demonstrated to me personally and professionally from many sides in designating me. This role also has an added emotional valence as my paternal grandfather was, in fact, a Diplomatic Courier and then Private Secretary of Ambassador Taliani in Shanghai. After one generation, this role reconnects me to a very significant aspect of my family's past. Italian law provides that the appointment can be held until the age of 70. In the best of hypotheses, I could therefore have many decades of work ahead of me!

FM: If you allow me: Is your favorite dish Italian?

SS: It couldn't NOT be?! I love any seafood dish and I couldn't give up pasta or true Neapolitan pizza.

FM: How do you spend your free time?

SS: In the very rare moments of freedom I enjoy reading, running, skiing or watching a good film. Traveling, however, remains my favorite hobby.

FM: What is your favorite travel destination?

SS: One of our wonderful and sunny Italian beaches, ski trails covered by snow or the breathtaking beauty of the Dolomites. Abroad, those countries rich with history and ancient traditions.

FM: Do you have a special message for our readers?

SS: May your readers and the Italian and Italian American community know that I intend to maintain the promise made to my predecessor, Cav. Parente at the moment of my appointment: that I would take on the role of Vice Consul with the same integrity, dedication and efficiency that have characterized for so long his work and that are the qualities for which I intend the Office of the Vice Consul of Italy in Cleveland to continue distinguishing itself in the future. I would also like to thank all those I have had the pleasure of meeting in the course of this first year of very intense activity for their warm welcome within a community for which I feel profound respect and to which I'm proud to belong.

Intervista: Vice Console Onorario Serena Scaiola

Francesca Mignosa: Vice Console, Grazie per la sua disponibilita' a quest'incontro. Ho appreso che Lei è natia di Roma. È vero?

Serena Scaiola: Si, è vero. Sono nata, cresciuta e vissuta a Roma fino alla fine del 1995. Ho frequentato scuole private, il liceo classico e mi sono laureata all'Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza." La decisione di studiare anche negli Stati Uniti mi ha poi portata per un anno a frequentare la prestigiosa Cornell University, tra il 1991-1992. È stata un'esperienza importantissima dal punto di vista personale ed in seguito anche professionale. Se oggi mi trovo a Cleveland ed ho il privilegio di rivestire le funzioni di Vice Console d'Italia è proprio a "causa" dei miei studi in America e di un percorso di vita inaspettato ma estremamente gratificante che ne è scaturito in modo del tutto accidentale.

FM: Nel 2006, le giunge la notizia dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri d'Italia della sua nomina a
Cleveland: una sorpresa? Per quanto rimarrà in carica?

SS: È un privilegio ed un onore che ho accettato con grande umiltà, nonché un fortissimo senso di responsabilità per la fiducia e la stima profonde che da più parti mi sono state dimostrate a livello personale e professionale nell'avermi nominata per tale carica. Ha altresì una valenza affettiva aggiunta: mio nonno paterno fu infatti, Corriere Diplomatico e poi Segretario Particolare dell'Ambasciatore Taliani a Shangai. A distanza di una generazione, l'incarico mi "ricollega" idealmente ad un aspetto per me particolarmente significativo del passato della mia famiglia. La legge italiana prevede che la carica debba essere lasciata al compimento dei 70 anni. Nella migliore delle ipotesi, quindi, potrei ancora avere diversi decenni di attività davanti a me!

FM: Se mi permette: Il suo piatto preferito e' italiano?

SS: Non potrebbe non esserlo! Adoro qualsiasi piatto a base di pesce e non potrei rinunciare alla pasta ed alla vera pizza napoletana.

FM: Come passa il tempo libero?

SS: Nei rarissimi momenti di libertà amo leggere, correre, sciare o vedere un buon film. Viaggiare resta, comunque, il mio hobby preferito.

FM: Qual'e' la Sua destinazione di viaggio prediletta?

SS: Una della nostre meravigliose ed assolate spiagge italiane, le piste da sci innevate e dalla bellezza mozzafiato delle Dolomiti. All'estero, quei Paesi ricchi di storia e tradizioni antiche.

FM: Ha un messaggio per i nostri lettori?

SS: I lettori e la comunità italiana ed italo-americana sappiano che intendo mantenere la promessa fatta al mio predecessore, il Cav.Parente al momento della mia nomina: cioè che rivestirò la carica di Vice Console con la stessa integrità, dedizione, efficienza che hanno caratterizzato così a lungo il suo operato e che sono le qualità per le quali intendo che l'Ufficio del Vice Consolato di Cleveland continui a distinguersi anche in futuro.
Inoltre vorrei ringraziare tutti coloro che ho avuto il piacere di conoscere nel corso di questo primo anno di intensissima attività, per avermi accolta con tanto calore all'interno di una comunità per la quale nutro un rispetto profondissimo e di cui sono orgogliosa di fare parte.
