Piero Sanna, director of The Destination, visited Detroit and Cleveland during the Italian Film Fest 2008 and met with LA GAZZETTA ITALIANA for an in-depth conversation on his movie and contemporary Italian cinema.

Francesca V. Mignosa: Maestro Sanna, how did your cinematographic career start?

Piero Sanna:  In reality, it never did. I have never been a director, I had some free time and I dedicated it to narrating a story through cinema.  I didn’t want to do cinema but this has helped me to do many things.  My profession is that of a “carabiniere” (a soldier from a special body of the Italian army to safeguard public order).

FVM: We can say that you are a “director by chance”…

PS: Yes, you can say that.  When the most important film critics were in front of a film for the first time, they were curious at first, then interested in how the story was told and with whom.  Lastly, they looked at the themes they touched upon.  My dedication and passion caught their attention so much that the Destination has won numerous awards.

FVM: Now I know that you come from Sardinia, but why did you set your film in this region?

PS:  I think that it’s positive that one can narrate what happens to a person, what is felt and go back to one’s roots.  This is probably better, more authentic and real.  I thought about a universal story, without being arrogant, and I also included the “carabinieri” element.  I focused on a young man who becomes a “carabiniere” and I narrated the story through him, through the emotions that one feels in the face of a situation larger than us -- this is the spirit of the story.

FVM: Touching upon the theme of universality, I think that Italians are good storytellers.  We can tell a story with charisma and humor.  What blocks the globalization of contemporary Italian cinema abroad? Is it just a matter of poor marketing?

PS: We, Italians, are very passionate and sentimental and maybe we find some difficulties in telling a story within a different social context that has a distinct spiritual and mental foundation.  We don’t give in to impositions.  It’s very difficult to control any Italian author.  We have a way of expressing ourselves outside of the interests that can result in this nation, we don’t think about business.

FVM:  This festival is certainly a praiseworthy initiative organized by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit but it’s only the beginning of a long path. How can we commit to continue this cinematographic dialogue between Italy and the USA?

PS: It’s not difficult -- the resources already exist.  It’s fundamental that we stay in touch constantly and work for the pleasure of doing something together.  We only need dedication and good will and we have fun along the way.

FVM:  Where did you stop during this North American tour?

PS: I started in Montreal, continued in Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami (my physical presence) even though the film was shown in many other places.  I was pleased to know that, in a far away continent, they appreciate the history of a small nation such as Italy – this made me ponder on the taste of the American people, and this nation.  They were particularly taken by the meaning of family.  They asked questions at the end of the movie on the value of family, as if they desired to have this, and to live a life so connected on the human level.  This struck me.  I asked myself how this society lives, communicates and behaves and I now have an opinion.

FVM:  How did the Italian and Italian American communities welcome you?

PS:  This is another aspect that truly made me emotional.  To see young people with Italian great grandparents and how attached they were to their roots, how they feel their land.  They are taken by this code of belonging.  If we unite this strength we will not only do some folklore, but certainly much more.

Piero Sanna, Regista di “La Destinazione” in visita a Detroit e Cleveland durante l’Italian Film Fest 2008 ha incontrato LA GAZZETTA ITALIANA per un approfondimento sul film e il cinema contemporaneo italiano.

Francesca V. Mignosa:  Maestro Sanna, com’e’ cominciata la sua carriera cinematografica?

Piero Sanna:  In realta’ non e’ mai cominciata.  Io regista non sono e non l’ho mai fatto, avevo solo del tempo libero e l’ho dedicato a raccontare una storia attraverso il cinema. Non e’ che volessi fare cinema.  Il cinema mi ha aiutato molto a fare tante cose.  La mia professione e’ quella del carabiniere.

FVM: Quindi possiamo dire che sia quasi un “regista per caso”...

PS:  Si, si puo’ dire anche cosi. Possiamo dire che era cosi per i piu’ grandi critici cinematografici quando si sono trovati davanti ad un film per la prima volta.  Prima erano curiosi, poi interessati a come si raccontava la storia e con chi.  E poi sono gli argomenti che si trattano.  Questo mio impegno e questa mia passione li ha un po’ incuriositi tanto che La Destinazione ha vinto parecchi premi.   

FVM: Adesso so che e’ di origine sarda, ma perche’ la Sardegna come setting per il suo film?

PS:  Penso che sia positivo che uno possa raccontare tutto quello che gli passa, quello che sente facendo riferimento alle proprie radici.  Forse gli viene anche meglio, e’ piu’ autentico e vero.  Ho pensato a questa storia universale, senza presunzione, e l’arma dei carabinieri era l’altro elemento.  Ho estrapolato un ragazzo che diventa carabiniere e con lui ho raccontato questa storia, attraverso le emozioni che puo affrontare davanti ad una situazione piu’ grande di lui – questo e’ lo spirito del racconto.

FVM: Sul tema dell’universalita’, penso che noi italiani siamo dei bravi contastorie.  Sappiamo raccontare una storia con carisma e siamo anche un po’ spiritosi.  Cosa blocca la globalizzazione del cinema italiano contemporaneo all’estero? E’ solo una questione di cattivo marketing?

PS:  Noi italiani siamo molto passionali e sentimentali e forse troviamo qualche difficolta’ a raccontare una storia in un contesto sociale e ambientale diverso per formazione mentale e spirituale.   Non riusciamo a sottostare alle imposizioni.  L’autore italiano e’ difficile controllarlo.  Noi abbiamo un modo d’esprimerci al di fuori degli interessi che possono risultare in questa nazione, non pensiamo alla commercialita’, all’affare. 

FVM:  Una lodevole iniziativa organizzata dal Consolato d’Italia in Detroit, ma e’ solo l’inizio di un lungo percorso.  Come possiamo impegnarci per continuare a perpetuare questo dialogo cinematografico tra Italia e Stati Uniti?

PS:  Non e’ difficile – le risorse ci sono.  E’ fondamentale che ci sia un contatto costante, che ci accomuni per il piacere di fare qualcosa insieme.  Ci vuole solo impegno e buona volonta’ e ci si diverte anche. 

FVM: Quali sono state le tappe di questo tour nordamericano?

PS: Ho cominciato a Montreal, continuando per Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami (le mie presenze fisiche) anche se il film e’ stato mostrato anche in altri posti.  Mi ha fatto piacere il fatto che qui, in un lontano continente, apprezzano la storia di una piccola regione che e’ l’Italia – mi ha fatto riflettere sui gusti di questo popolo, questa nazione.  Li ha colpiti molto il senso della famiglia.  Le domande che mi facevano alla fine sul valore della famiglia, come se loro desiderassero che anch’essi potessero attingere questo, e vivere una vita vicina cosi umanamente.  Questo m’ha colpito. Mi sono anche chiesto come vive, comunica e come si comporta questa societa’ e mi son fatto un’idea.

FVM: Com’e’ stato accolto dalle comunita’ italiane ed italo-americane?

PS:  Questo e’ un altro aspetto che mi ha veramente emozionato.  Vedere giovani che hanno bisnonni italiani e quanto sono attaccati a queste radici, come sentono la propria terra.  Sono emozionati da questo codice di appartenenza.  Se uniamo questa forza non e’ solamente per fare un po’ di folklore, ma sicuramente molto di piu’.
