Francesca V. Mignosa: Your travels have surely inspired the peculiarity of your musical style very hard to label: a mixture of ska, swing, jazz, pop, rock steady, patchanka, reggae and folk. You have, however, returned to your roots: the Mediterranean. Why? Roy Paci: The Mediterranean is the pot of those who are happy to cook with whatever they have in their home and, usually, delicious and original dishes come out. As a child, I listened to Egyptian, Greek, Turkish, and Tunisian radio stations and I would have fun blending those tunes with what I had learned. Today I still follow the same principle. FVM: In 1998 you funded “Etnagigante”, an independent label to encourage and support emerging Sicilian groups. Only Sicilians? RP: At first I wanted to favor only Sicilian groups, later I realized that interesting musical realities were developing throughout Italy and I thought…why not give them the right visibility? I have always supported unknown artists with great potential that would have otherwise never been produced. Etnagigante is my philanthropic work and it gives me much satisfaction. FVM: Toda Joia Toda Beleza, was the hit of summer 2007, and was well received by Italian and international audiences alike. Have you ever performed in the USA? RP: I have never had the luck to play in the United States with Aretuska although for me it would be a dream because numerous communities of Italians and Sicilians ask us and support us with an immense affection. We are looking in all possible ways for a sponsor that would give us the opportunity to book a couple of US performances. We will also be touring in Mexico in April…can you help us out? Mignosa: I tuoi viaggi avranno sicuramente ispirato la peculiarità del tuo stile musicale difficilmente etichettabile: un misto di ska, swing, jazz, pop, rocksteady, patchanka, reggae e folk, ma sei comunque tornato alle tue radici, il Mediterraneo. Perchè? Roy Paci: Il Mediterraneo è la pentola di chi si accontenta di cucinare con ciò che si trova in casa e, che il più delle volte, vengono fuori dei piatti prelibati e originalissimi. Da piccolo ascoltavo frequenze egiziane, greche, turche, tunisine e mi divertivo ad impastare il tutto con ciò che avevo imparato con la musica. Ancora adesso seguo lo stesso principio. FVM: Nel 1998 fondi “Etnagigante”, un’etichetta indipendente per incoraggiare e sostenere gruppi emergenti siciliani. Solo siciliani? RP: Dapprima cercavo di favorire solo gruppi siciliani poi mi sono reso conto che tante belle realtà arrivavano anche da altre parti d’Italia e quindi … perché non dare loro la giusta visibilità? Ho appoggiato da sempre artisti sconosciuti con grosse potenzialità che le major altrimenti non avrebbero mai prodotto. Etnagigante è la mia parte filantropica che mi da tante soddisfazioni. FVM: Toda Joia Toda Beleza, tormentone dell’estate 2007, viene ben accolta dal pubblico italiano ed internazionale. Vi siete mai esibiti negli USA? RP: Non ho mai avuto la fortuna di suonare negli Stati Uniti con Aretuska ma sarebbe per me un sogno anche perché numerose comunità di italiani e siciliani ci richiedono fortemente supportandoci con immense affetto. Stiamo cercando in tutti i modi un promoter che ci dia la possibilità di poter fare un po’ di concerti, tra l’altro facciamo un tour in Mexico al Aprile … non è che puoi darci una mano?
