Mother’s day was born in the United States in 1907, on the proposal of Anna Jarvis, Philadelphia. In 1914 it was officially approved by President Wilson who announced the decision of Congress to celebrate it the second Sunday of May, as an expression of love and gratitude for Mothers across the country.

Since then, the feast is celebrated in different ways throughout the world.  While Italy celebrates on the same day as the USA, Norway celebrates on the second Sunday of February, Argentina the second of October; while in France Mother’s day falls on the last Sunday of May and is celebrated as the birthday of the family.

This feast has ancient origins. Centuries ago pagan rituals took place for several days to celebrate the rebirth of spring and the blossoming of nature, and were called the days of the “Great Mother”, symbol of fertility. In ancient Greece people devoted an entire day of the year to their mothers with a feast in honor of Rea, Mother of all Gods.  The Romans, on the other hand, celebrated for a week the divinity Cybele who symbolizes Mother Nature.

This year, Mother's Day will take place on May 11th and on this day children across the globe give flowers, sweets, small gifts and attention to their mothers. Mother's Day remains one of the few "non- religious" holidays appreciated throughout the world.  This joyful celebration should also call for a reflection on the role of "mothers" in our society.
Despite the recognition of motherhood as an important social function in our society, women still bear the weight of working and taking care of children. Many Italian women must work even more than their American or European colleagues since they also take care of their domestic chores entirely on their own.

Despite the many legislative measures and the increase of public and private structures for family services and support, mothers continue to give up their own working aspirations to devote themselves to the growth of their children. Women certainly have more opportunities than in the past yet maternity has not found a "natural" place in society considering the lack of time and the pace to reconcile the desire of motherhood with a career.

As many recent years, the initiative to use Azalea for research during Mother’s Day in most Italian piazzas will continue. On Sunday, May 11th, a multitude of flowers will color over 3,000 piazzas in Italy.

Volunteers of the Italian Association of Cancer Research (AIRC) will distribute thousands of plants with information on prevention in exchange of a small contribution. Many show biz stars participated in a pr campaign through commercials and speeches during popular TV shows to share their solidarity. The initiative usually finances 50% of all research projects undertaken by AIRC for the discovery of innovative cures.

La Festa della mamma nacque in America, negli Stati Uniti, nel 1907, su proposta di Anna Jarvis, di Philadelphia. Nel 1914 fu ufficializzata dal Presidente Wilson che annunciò la delibera del Congresso di festeggiarla la seconda domenica di maggio, come espressione pubblica di amore e gratitudine per le madri del Paese. Da allora la festa si è diffusa in molti Paesi del mondo, anche se non viene festeggiata nello stesso giorno. Infatti mentre l'Italia adotta la data americana, in Norvegia viene celebrata la seconda domenica di Febbraio, in Argentina la seconda di Ottobre; in Francia la festa della mamma cade l'ultima domenica di maggio ed è celebrata come compleanno della famiglia.

Questa festa ha origini molto lontane, infatti secoli addietro venivano fatti antichissimi riti pagani, che duravano diversi giorni, per festeggiare la rinascita della primavera ed il rifiorire della natura ed erano chiamati i giorni della "Grande Madre", simbolo di fertilità. Anche nell'antica Grecia il popolo dedicava alle loro genitrici un giorno dell'anno, con la festa in onore della dea Rea, madre di tutti gli Dei, mentre gli antichi romani usavano festeggiare per una settimana intera la divinità Cibele che simboleggiava madre natura.

Quest’anno la festa della mamma è l’11 maggio e quel giorno in Italia e in molte parti del mondo figli di tutte le età regaleranno fiori, dolci, regali e piccole attenzioni alle loro mamme. La festa della mamma è una delle feste "laiche" più apprezzate in tutto il mondo. Ma, in questo lieto giorno, in cui le mamme sono circondate di amore, affetto e piccole attenzioni si dovrebbe anche riflettere sulla figura ed il ruolo della "mamma" nella nostra società. Nonostante il riconoscimento della maternità quale importante funzione sociale, ancora oggi sono soprattutto le donne a sopportare il carico del lavoro di cura che la nascita di un figlio (o più di uno) comporta. In particolare, proprio le donne italiane devono lavorare molto più delle loro colleghe americane ed europee, dal momento che oltre al lavoro esterno, svolgono quasi interamente da sole i lavori domestici. Ancora oggi, nonostante i numerosi provvedimenti legislativi e l'aumento delle strutture pubbliche e private di servizi e sostegno alle famiglie, sono le madri a dover rinunciare alle proprie aspirazioni lavorative per dedicarsi alla crescita dei figli. Naturalmente, oggi le donne hanno molte più opportunità rispetto ad un passato non troppo lontano, eppure la maternità non ha ancora trovato una collocazione "naturale" nella società, in quanto i tempi ed i ritmi di quest'ultima non consentono di conciliare serenamente il desiderio di maternità con quello professionale.

Per la festa della mamma torna a fiorire l'azalea della Ricerca. Domenica 11 maggio una moltitudine di fiori colorerà oltre 3.000 piazze italiane; i volontari dell'Associazione italiana per la ricerca sul cancro (AIRC) distribuiranno migliaia di piante assieme a una pubblicazione tascabile con consigli sulle norme di prevenzione in cambio di un piccolo contributo. E, per promuovere l'iniziativa, diversi personaggi dello spettacolo hanno raccolto l’invito e preparato spot e interventi in trasmissioni televisive a favore della ricerca sul cancro. Un gesto di solidarietà a favore dell’AIRC, ma anche un regalo ideale per tutte le mamme. Questa iniziativa, da sola, garantisce un costante sostegno economico, permettendo di finanziare il 50 per cento dei progetti di ricerca approvati dall'AIRC.

La manifestazione, che è ormai un appuntamento fisso ogni anno, è volta alla raccolta di fondi per la ricerca, alla scoperta di cure sempre più innovative per la salute di tutta la famiglia.
