The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) announced in early January 2008 the appointment of Paola Morsiani as new curator of contemporary art. I met with Paola to discuss her new role and professional background.

Francesca V. Mignosa: What are your plans for CMA?

Paola Morsiani: I have already found a diverse and dynamic contemporary collection here at CMA.  I hope to continue investing on this heritage to further develop and promote its acquisitions and add local, national and international artists for a 360 degree integrated geographical vision. I also hope to further strengthen acquisitions wherever a gap might exist and to coordinate special exhibitions for the community.

FVM: How was the transition from Venezia to the USA for you and your husband?

PM: In 1988 Luca (Buvoli), my husband, won a Fulbright scholarship for the USA and we moved to New York City. I held a BA in Art History and Criticism from the University of Padova and pursued an MA in Visual Arts Administration from New York University. I later worked at the Queens Museum of Art, at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and finally as curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. I find that Cleveland is very beautiful for its natural sceneries and very open to the new. It is also important for me to be respectful of a place and its people. I was also surprised to learn about the large Italian community here and have been warmly greeted since my arrival.

FVM: I know that your husband, Luca Buvoli, is an internationally recognized artist and maintains a studio in New York’s East Village. How will you handle the distance?

PM: We have done it before when I lived in Houston. My [2-year-old] daughter, Electra, and I will live in Cleveland while my husband will continue to maintain his NYC studio and is considering opening one in Cleveland. From here, the distance is actually less.

PAOLA MORSIANI: NUOVA CURATRICE AL CMA

A gennaio 2008 il Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) ha annunciato la nomina di Paola Morsiani come nuova curatrice d’arte contemporanea.  Ho incontrato Paola per discutere del suo nuovo ruolo e del suo passato professionale.

Francesca V. Mignosa: Quali sono i tuo progetti per il CMA?

Paola Morsiani: Ho gia’ trovato una collezione diversa e dinamica qui al CMA.  Spero di continuare ad investire su questo patrimonio per svilupparlo ulteriormente e promuovere le sue acquisizioni e aggiungere artisti locali, nazionali ed internazionali per una visione geografica integrata a 360 gradi.  Spero inoltre di rafforzare le acquisitioni dovunque esista una lacuna e di coordinare esibizioni speciali per la comunita’.

FVM: Com’e’ stata la transizione da Venezia agli USA per te e tuo marito?

PM: Nel 1988 Luca (Buvoli), mio marito, ha vinto una borsa di studio Fulbright per gli USA e ci siamo trasferiti a New York.  Io avevo una laurea in Storia e Critica d’Arte  dall’Universita’ di Padova e decisi di intraprendere un Masters in Visual Arts Administration alla New York University.  Ho lavorato poi al Queens Museum of Art, al Carnegie Museum of Art di Pittsburgh ed infine sono stata curatrice al Contemporary Museum of Art di Houston.  Trovo che Cleveland sia una citta’ molto bella per l’aspetto naturalistico e molto aperta al nuovo.  E’ importante per me essere rispettosa di un posto e della sua gente.  Sono anche stata sorpresa dalla grande comunita’ italiana qui e della calda accoglienza ricevuta.  

FVM: So che tuo marito, Luca Buvoli, e’ un artista riconosciuto a livello internazionale e mantiene uno studio nell’East Village di New York.  Come farete con la distanza?

PM: Ce l’abbiamo fatta prima quando abitavo a Houston. Io e mia figlia, Electra (2 anni) vivremo a Cleveland mentre mio marito continuera’ a mantenere il suo studio a NYC e sta considerando l’apertura di un altro studio a Cleveland. Da qui, la distanza e’ minore.
