It was many, many years ago when a young lady walked into my office
and said she had a great idea. In her hand she was carrying an eight-page,
tabloid size newspaper with a gigantic masthead identifying it simply
as Italia. It looked more like a prototype straight out of
a neighborhood copy machine. There were a handful of stories to
go along with a few display ads that looked like they were tossed
together in rapid-fire fashion. She went on to explain that the
Cleveland market needed an Italian American newspaper and she was
right on. It was a great idea! But in no way was this lady, who
was not Italian but divorced from one, going to let me "run
the show" as editor.
I was not asking for a "piece of the action." Conversely
as adamant, this Sicilian wasn't going to lend my name unless ad
sales and production were going to be above board. She walked out
and that was that. Or so I believed. Unfortunately, she ran into
some money problems and tragically suddenly passed away.
It wasn't that long after her passing that a man, who apparently
had picked up on her idea, walked into my office. In this case however,
he would be the "money man" (do all the bookkeeping and
posting) and I would be in complete charge of writing, editing,
ad sales and circulation. We made a deal and La Gazzetta Italiana
was officially born in May 1992.
La Gazzetta Italiana has had a change of ownership during
the past several years and there have been staff changes with lots
of "young blood" coming on board. We like to believe that
La Gazzetta Italiana continues to get better and better,
larger and larger with more readers, subscribers, advertisers and
supporters. What began as a 20-page monthly has become a regular
44-pager. (Sometimes 48, even 52 pages!)
To celebrate La Gazzetta's Sweet Sixteen, we are offering
1-year subscriptions for only $15 when you purchase a new subscription
for yourself or as a gift or renew your current one online at by
clicking here! This offer is only valid online and for a limited
time.
PAS Publishing looks forward to many more years of publication
and success and we are proud to bring to Italian Americans and the
general community a better perspective on our ancestry and heritage.
We Americans should be particularly proud of the Italian roots of
our country and of our contributions from the beginnings of history
up to the present day.
Buon compleanno La Gazzetta Italiana!
